Anybody who has ever played backgammon can recognize a backgammon board instantly. The four quadrants separated into six triangles or 'points' is immediately recognizable as the traditional backgammon board. The fact of the matter, though, is that it seems like folks are seeing fewer and fewer backgammon boards as the years go on. This would normally seem like a pretty clear cut indication that the popularity of backgammon is waning but, somewhat curiously, this doesn't seem to be the case. Backgammon is in fact enjoying a worldwide resurgence in popularity not seen for decades or even centuries. What, then, could be the explanation for why there are fewer backgammon boards being seen or bought? Like many new trends in our age, the answer lies in the internet.
The online world has changed many of our cultural and social institutions in many ways. It is up to the individual to decide if a certain change in a social trend due to the internet is a good thing or a bad thing, but one certainly would be hard-pressed to consider the rise of online backgammon a disturbing trend. One needs only to type in "online backgammon" into their search engine to see just how popular the world of internet backgammon has become. Myriad sites are devoted to the game and, as such, backgammon boards seem to be taking the hit. While it would be a bit of a stretch to say that backgammon boards are in danger of becoming obsolete, one can certainly concede that they are currently on the back burner. At any rate, the simple fact of the matter is that, while internet backgammon is hugely popular at this point in time, it will never completely replace the use of backgammon boards and the traditional way of playing.
For one thing, backgammon sets of the traditional ilk can be found with beautiful, ornate decoration. Many finer backgammon boards are built with quality woods and precious stones, and come wrapped in luxurious leather. In addition to allowing a fully-functioning game of backgammon, these higher end boards add a touch of class and distinction to any living room that they grace. One could run through all of the pros and cons of both forms of backgammon, but the jury would probably end split. There are great reasons to own a backgammon set, just as there are wonderful benefits to game when being played online. In the end, it is up to the individual to decide which incarnation of backgammon he or she would like to play. Either decision, though, will result in extreme pleasure.
